The Bollinger family have been making Champagne since 1829 and they are probably the most famous family-owned Champagne house. The Special Curvée is their house style, made mainly from Reserve wines, some of which have been aged for more than 15 years. It is made from 60% Pinot Noir grapes (plus 25% Chardonnay and 15% Meunier) which gives it a beautiful golden colour. On the nose it shows ripe fruits and spices, while on the palate there are also some nutty notes and a lovely complexity.

This classic non-vintage Champagne is quite rich in style, with honeyed brioche aromas. The palate is just as forceful, with broad, ripe fruit, biscuity highlights, a creamy texture and a lingering finish.

Very much in the Krug, unforgiving mould. Some putty aromas and then coarse apple skins. Definitely no malolactic fermentation (this written when tasting blind). Hard and green now, though I’m quite prepared to believe that this will mature into something lovely, as well-matured bottles of Bolly NV tend to be. Several of the other tasters loved this.

The NV Brut Special Cuvee is fabulous. Hints of pears, pastry crust and hazelnut lead to an expansive core of fruit. There is plenty of the signature Bollinger oxidative style in this rich, enveloping Champagne. Once again the Special Cuvee is one of the best Champagnes in its price range. This is Lot L114501. Disgorged April 26, 2011. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2015.
Bollinger is of course one of the great names in Champagne. The Special Cuvee is typically one of my favorite wines in its price range, but it is the 2004 Rose La Grande Annee that steals the show this year. Bollinger is unique among Champagne houses in that the reserve wines are all bottled in magnum and with natural cork, a huge, labor-intensive effort.

This is firm and tightly knit, with a backbone of steely acidity, showing a fine, creamy texture that imparts an overall sense of finesse to the layers of poached apple, mille-feuille, black currant, kumquat and honey, showing hints of ground spice and smoky mineral. Drink now through 2020. 16,000 cases imported.–AN
